Ambos factores resultan en una alta diversidad biológica con características únicas. Paradójicamente, esta es una de las regiones menos estudiadas del país desde el punto de vista biológico, no obstante que la dinámica económica del área ha causado altos niveles de deterioro ambiental, alterando, en algunos casos de manera irreversible, el paisaje, y trayendo como consecuencia la pérdida de diversidad. Esta situación le confiere a la Sierra el carácter de prioritaria para el desarrollo de proyectos de inventario biológico. Este carácter se extiende a los grupos humanos: la Tarahumara alberga numerosas comunidades indígenas, con su propia lengua, usos y costumbres, que coexisten con los mestizos estableciendo relaciones que deterioran de manera progresiva la diversidad cultural en la región. Por su manera de vida, estos grupos representan un importante acervo de información sobre el conocimiento y uso del medio ambiente, relevante tanto desde el punto de vista científico como cultural. El presente proyecto tiene como objetivos llevar a cabo el inventario de los peces, anfibios, reptiles y mamíferos de la región de Norogachi, en la Alta Sierra Tarahumara, Chihuahua y determinar el conocimiento que los miembros de las comunidades indígenas Rarámuri tienen de ellos. El trabajo propuesto se inscribe dentro de un proyecto mayor de colaboración entre instituciones de investigación en México y los Estados Unidos y las comunidades Rarámuri, cuyo objetivo general es documentar la diversidad biológica, lingüística y cultural de la Sierra Tarahumara. Como resultado del proyecto propuesto, se espera obtener una base de datos con 3000 registros, generar una tesis de maestría y una de licenciatura y producir una serie de publicaciones sobre la distribución de los grupos de estudio, así como de las relaciones entre los Rarámuri y su medio ambiente natural. A largo plazo se espera que la información generada sea de utilidad para el desarrollo de proyectos de las comunidades Rarámuri locales, interesadas de manera activa en la preservación de su cultura y la restauración de su medio ambiente.
