Description

La familia Staphylinidae es un grupo de coleópteros rico en especies, aunque taxonómicamente es pobremente conocido en México. Hasta 1992 se había citado para México 964 especies pertenecientes a 213 géneros. Esta cifra se incrementó a 1,236 especies de 253 género después de haber examinado alrededor de 15,000 ejemplares depositados en las colecciones de Field Museum of Natural History, A.F. Newton, Jr. y J.L. Navarrete, durante un periodo de 40 días. Con base en esta actividad no es aventurado asegurar que la riqueza específica en México es mucho mayor de lo que ahora se conoce debido a la falta de trabajos faunísticos y de revisión. Un problema estrechamente relacionado con el avance taxonómico de este grupo es la carencia de literatura que permite determinar apropiadamente a muchas especies, incluso a nivel genérico. Por ello, en este proyecto se elaborará claves para los géneros de Staphylinidae de México, se proporcionarán comentarios genéricos, así como el catálogo de especies citadas en la literatura. Se incluirá además la elaboración de una base de datos con información de alrededor de 100 especies mexicanas.
